Some characters follow you out of the session.
Animal Hospital is a game about the quiet parts. You clock in, you watch the lobby, you check a patient who seems perfectly normal – and then you notice the smile. This store exists because of what happens after that: the characters stay with you.
Where it starts
In Animal Hospital, patients arrive by ambulance as victims of anomaly attacks, and those attacks come every five shifts. That rhythm is the whole game. Calm, calm, then something walks through the doors that should not have.
You learn to read the ward the way the staff do. The crooked smile. Three glowing eyes where two should be. An X-rayed face that stops being a face at all. The ordinary first, then the wrong – and a room full of people deciding whether to let it through.
The cast we could not put down
Ratthew and Rattina. Dr. Harlow, who calls the corporation’s research a gift and never says what kind. Ron from Accounting. Liz, fired for reporting “fake news” on the anomalies when the truth was that she had gotten too close to it. Officer Duckman. Sam. Lobby Cat. The Clown. The Mimic, wearing a patient file that is not its own.
And Barney – filed under Characters by the community wiki, and described as an anomaly on the wiki’s own Anomalies page. Both, apparently. Nobody has managed to tidy him into one category, and we have given up trying.
Then there is the Stalker. It waits in hallway corners and drains your sanity if you look at it directly. A camera flash sends it away. The Head Banger calms down if you hand it coffee. Tiny details like that are why this game sticks.
What we do
We find these characters as plush, figures and small things for a desk, and we describe them plainly: around 27 cm for the plush, allow 1-2 cm of variation; a PP cotton fill; a short-pile plush cover; and the age it suits, which is 3 and over. Enough that you know what is arriving before it arrives.
Who ends up here
Mostly players – teenagers and young adults who play in short sessions and look things up mid-game, usually on a phone. Some arrive knowing every line of dialogue in the game. Some have only ever seen Ratthew on a thumbnail and want to know why he is carrying a key. Both are very welcome.
